BIG Act

According to the BIG Act, reserved procedures are considered medical procedures that entail unacceptable risks if performed by an unskilled professional. The procedures may be performed independently by doctors, dentists and midwives.

Healthcare providers who are not independently authorized may, under certain conditions, perform reserved procedures on behalf of a healthcare provider who is independently authorized. The most important condition is that the contracting healthcare provider is authorized and competent to perform the reserved procedure.

You are authorized based on your obtained diploma. You are competent if you have the knowledge and skills of the procedure in question, whereby you must ensure that you remain competent.
You must be able to demonstrate your authority and competence. This means regular further training and proof of certificates and/or accreditation points.

Furthermore, you must re-register yourself for the BIG Act every five years. If you are not registered, you are not allowed to use the title that belongs to your profession. You may perform reserved acts, but only under the supervision of a registered healthcare provider.
